“Rain” and “Bones” by Ugly Kids Club

Based in Nashville TN, Ugly Kids Club is the music collaboration of Steve Wilson (producer, songwriter, guitarist) and Aliegh Shields (vocalist, lyricist, guitarist). The pair formed in early 2011 when they discovered their shared love for minimalistic rock duos such as Sleigh Bells, Crystal Castles, and The Kills.

Steve is a Grammy Nominated rock producer and songwriter by day working with bands such as The Juliana Theory and Jonezetta. Aliegh is a bartender who grew up on stage and in her bedroom teaching herself guitar. Their contrasting musical backgrounds helped form their unique sound of crunchy beats, fuzzy guitars, and undertones of synth-pop.

In 2011, UKC released their self-titled debut EP. The duo is back at it again releasing a six-part series with a single and video every month. Each single will be available for download on iTunes. The first in the series is a two-track EP, Rain & Bones.

“Big Easy Express” by Emmett Malloy

Congratulations to Emmett Malloy, Brushfire Records co-founder, for his recent GRAMMY win! Emmett won a GRAMMY for the Best Long Form Video for his film Big Easy Express. Indie folk heroes Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Tennessee’s Old Crow Medicine Show, and Britain’s acclaimed Mumford & Sons, climbed aboard a beautiful train in California, setting out for New Orleans, Louisiana on a “tour of dreams”. The resulting film from this journey is nothing short of magical.

“Being on an vintage train, riding the rails through the heart of America took us all back in time a bit. It was easy to get lost and imagine that we were just there for the fun of it all. Rolling along with your friends and playing music because you loved it. Our cameras were there to participate in the journey and never get in the way of the moving train.” – Emmett Malloy

“When You Were Young” by KEETON

In December, frontman of the Houston rock band The 71’s, Keeton Coffman, announced his last show with the band for an undetermined amount of time. He decided to take a much needed break from steering the 71’s’ rock and roll road show so he could write some slow songs. Last November Keeton released an EP titled I’m On Fire for free download via bandcamp. He also released the single, “When You Were Young.”

In addition, he has written a dozen new songs and has begun recording them with his good friend Jay Snider at his studio, Tight Sound in Houston, Texas. The songs are focused on various spiritual realities we all face — desire, guilt, fear, passion, love.

For lyrics, videos, and other fun updates, visit Keeton’s blog every so often.

“Up To Something” by Shotgun Honeymoon

The Culmination EP, the latest from Los Angeles, California-based acoustic-pop-rock singer-songwriter Eric Mellgren (aka Shotgun Honeymoon), is just that, the culmination of a lot of hard work following up Shotgun Honeymoon’s 2007 debut, Forgone Conclusion.

Born in Lexington, Kentucky, but picking up the guitar in his college days at Florida State University, Shotgun Honeymoon played throughout Florida, honing his craft during college, often times supporting his high-school music teacher’s band. Getting an itch to take music more seriously, Shotgun Honeymoon moved to Los Angeles, got a job at a major record label, and began working in the industry. All the while writing songs that would become Forgone Conclusion.

The Culmination EP, delivers a five-track collection of songs that find the songsmith further exploring the sounds he created on the debut, while also being more adventurous with the assistance of his backing band. Shotgun Honeymoon shows growth both lyrically and musically from Forgone Conclusion, without losing the loving, and passionate vibes that made his debut a warming, soothing collection of acoustic pop.

You may watch the official video for the track “Up to Something” on YouTube.
