“I Get By” by King Washington

The Los Angeles-based band, King Washington, was started in 2005 by singer and songwriter Tyson Kelly. Tyson is also a film-maker and a graduate of the New York Film Academy (2007). In addition, he is the son of songwriter, Tom Kelly, who is famous for co-writing Madonna’s, “Like A Virgin;” Cindy Lauper’s, “True Colors;” and The Pretenders’, “I’ll Stand By You,” among others. The rest of the band consists of Dylan Cronin, bass and vocals; George Krikes, lead guitar; and Kyle Turek, percussion. Together they provide “complex harmonies” and “intelligent chord progressions.” King Washington’s influence lies in 60’s and 70’s rock n’ roll – a time when they believe it was a songwriter’s game.

“Slide” and “Warm Warm Water” by Ben Keeler and the 500 Club

Hailing from Chicago, Ben Keeler and the 500 Club began in Premier Windy City venues. They also toured the Midwest with their album, Water Water. Keeler is currently working on a new album (to be announced this summer) in his new hometown of San Francisco, California.

Water Water incorporates an array of orchestral instruments, prominent piano segments, and a backing choir component. I find myself enjoying the piano-driven contributions with guitar and horn involvement. Please have a listen to “Slide” and “Warm Warm Water” below.

Meekos & Me debut the album “Anxious Little Turtles”

Today the LA-based band, Meekos & Me, released their debut album Anxious Little Turtles. The band is fronted by lead vocalist and guitarist, Joey Colando, and classically trained cellist Danny Grab. “Animals In My Room” is their first single. I’ve also included the lovely “Entropy”—its acoustic portion rings of Coldplay’s “Don’t Panic.” Lastly, you’ll find the catchy, percussion-heavy “Grove Street.”

If you like what you hear, head to bandcamp and purchase a copy! The image is courtesy of the Meekos & Me myspace photo page. The mp3s are courtesy of Sera Roadnight at M T Press.

“Rock n Roll Queen” and “Amulet” by Bowery Beasts

LA-based indie rock band, Bowery Beasts will release their debut EP, Heavy You on July 5th, 2011 via Black Creem.

Led by enigmatic front man Marion Belle, the Beasts have captivated the Scene with their self-described brew of “Blue Jean Glam,” a mixture of psycho-tropic folk, 70’s metal strut, & California haze… A series of 7″ and 45″ releases, lauded by Sex Pistols guitarist and KROQ DJ Steve Jones, have led to gigs with Tame Impala, J Roddy Walston & The Business, Dungen, and most recently, a residency at the renowned Silverlake Lounge… “Heavy You” screams instant Summertime classic that may take you back to the heady days when giants like Freddy Mercury ruled the waves, when all we had was love, and all we had were songs.
