The Dandy Warhols at Warehouse Live: Labor Day 2009

While the Dandy’s have a new 2009 album, The Dandy Warhols Are Sound, their setlist was rather extensive, therefore, allowing a wide range of tunes from several of their albums, namely; Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia (2009), Earth To The Dandy Warhols (2008), Odditorium or Warlords of Mars (2005), and Welcome To The Monkey House (2003). Rumors of them playing until midnight circulated, as they are known for their long shows.

While rummaging through internet bulletins, I came across an interesting article from Spinner regarding frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor’s lyrics: “When Michael Jackson dies/ We’re covering Blackbird”—something he didn’t plan on having to do so soon. The phrase from the title track of 2003’s Welcome to the Monkey House was in reference to Michael Jackson buying Paul McCartney’s songs. Aggravated by the pop star, Taylor-Taylor vowed to cover a Beatle’s song when MJ could no longer make money from it. This cover, and their new album is available here.

Spindrift, an experimental rock band originating in Delaware, opened for the Dandy’s. They’ve contributed to two soundtracks: Quentin Tarantino’s Hell Ride and a western celebrated indie film named after, and inspired by, their 2002 album, The Legend of God’s Gun. Some songs started off dream-pop while others began with a slow southern beat, but all pretty much ended with hard rock vocals and electric guitar solos.

“In The NA” by The Hidden Cameras

Arranged and written by frontman Joel Gibb, The Hidden Cameras’ “In The NA” is convoluted as ever, something his Canadian band is known for. Their fifth studio album, Origin:Orphan, is scheduled for release September 22, 2009. It will be the band’s first release on Arts & Crafts (The American Analog Set, Broken Social Scene, Phoenix). QMagazine tweeted in favor of this video earlier today calling it, “Absolutely ridiculously brilliant.”

“Pressure” by Company of Thieves

Company of Thieves is an indie rock trio from Chicago, Illinois. They released thier debut album, Ordinary Riches, back in February. They’ve been compared to Rilo Kiley and some hear similarities in vocalist, Genevieve Schatz, and the Welsh singer Duffy. To me, she sounds more Australian than Welsh.

“Boys & Girls” by Martin Solveig and Dragonette

This has to be my pick of the week! The man at the desk in the beginning of this video is French designer Jean-Paul Gaultier. Martin Solveig, the male principal in this video, lives in Paris and is a house DJ there. He has four albums but this song is simply a single. It features Martina Sorbara and the rest of the Canadian band Dragonette.

“Wanna Go Back” by The Lovemakers

The Lovemakers have released their single, “See What I Wanna See” from their sophomore full-length album Let’s Be Friends. On September 8, 2009 the album will be available on iTunes and it will hit retail on September 15th, 2009. I really like this band photo. I think it’s the floral rug. Anyway, join the mailing list and you can download this song for free!
